Creating a Compliant Experience: Licensing, Regulations, and Liability Insurance Needed to Sell Tours and Activities Online

Account

You want to sell a tour, activity, or other unique experience to travelers visiting your city or town. You’ve nailed down what your product will be. What now? Before anything else, make sure that your business is compliant on all fronts.

In previous parts of our Getting Started Guide for Experience Hosts, we helped you identify what kind of tour/activity you want to sell, and how to cater it to a desired audience set (what type of customers you want to attract).

Here, we’ll guide you through a few important legal and regulatory requirements to complete before you can officially offer your experience to travelers.

Licensing

Licensing requirements and rules can vary by country, state, county, and city. It is your responsibility  to make sure you adhere to the local laws and regulations of the markets and industries in which you operate. These are among the terms to which you agree in the Supplier Agreement when you sign up  to list products (your actual tour/activity) on our site.

Viator Standards and Code of Conduct

In accordance with Viator’s standards, your experience must:

Public Liability Insurance

Public liability insurance (PLI) is a standard form of business insurance that protects customers from injury while participating in your activities or while on your premises. We strongly encourage you to research your options and obtain PLI regardless of your type of product. If you offer high-risk products on Viator—including those that include any mode of transportation via air or water—you are required to carry PLI. Note that insurance requirements vary by country and product type; you must adhere to the local laws and regulations of the markets and industries in which you operate.

If you are required to carry PLI, you must provide your PLI policy details when creating your product on our site. If you do not upload proof of valid PLI to Viator within 30 days of publishing your product, we will deactivate your product.

You can upload your proof of PLI in the Account tab of the Viator Management Center, under the License & Insurance section.
